Across the country, big tech companies are racing to roll out driverless cars, and they’re already showing up on our streets.
In cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Atlanta, fully autonomous vehicles are available for public ride-hailing. New research finds that in San Francisco, robotaxis are already capturing more than a quarter of the rideshare market. And Waymo has shared that it plans to expand its fleet and its operations to several more major cities across the country over the next year.
The companies behind this rollout say they’re innovating, but workers and communities will pay the price. Driverless cars are already causing major disruptions, including blocking emergency vehicles, stopping randomly in intersections, and confusing pedestrians and cyclists. These vehicles are programmed to follow traffic laws, but lack the instincts and situational awareness human drivers use to respond to the real world.
Robotaxis also threaten jobs. They threaten livelihoods. And they threaten the organizing power we’ve built together.
As app workers, we’ve built this industry. We keep our cities moving. And just as we’re making progress in our fight for better wages, fairer treatment, and the right to unionize, billion-dollar companies are pushing technology designed to take us out of the equation.
If they succeed, we won’t just be displaced from our jobs. Every driver replaced by a robotaxi is one less worker in our movement, undermining our bargaining power and our ability to show up in force.
We’re demanding that our leaders invest time and resources into the things our communities actually need:
✅ Reliable public transit
✅ Infrastructure upgrades
✅ Safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists
✅ Job protections for the workers who keep our cities running
We don’t need robots on our streets. We need dignity, safety, and a seat at the table in shaping the future of transportation.
